Title of the contribution: Simulation of Crack Growth and Efficient Preconditioning
Abstract:
The propagation of cracks in structures is a basic phenomenon in fracture mechanics. With the help of modern adaptive finite element techniques we are able to predict the path of a slow moving crack quite well. This can be done in an efficient way, if we are able to solve each of the (up to 1000) intermediate linear systems (arising from the f.e. discretization of an actual crack situation) quick enough. We present a hierarchical-basis-like preconditioner that fulfils this demand very naturally in connection with the adaptive procedure.
