Nonlinear image registration using variational PDE methods – different models and solution techniques

Workshop on Bioimaging II / PDEs, Wed, 21 Nov, 2007

Speaker: Claudia Frohn-Schauf

Abstract

We consider the solution of the nonlinear image registration problem by using variational methods and focusing on mono-modal images. Especially nonlinear image registration techniques allow the alignment of data sets that are mismatched in a nonuniform manner. In the process the minimization of a similarity measure (depending on the modality (mono- or multi-modal)) leads to an ill-posed problem. There exist different possibilities for the necessary regularization of which we mainly focus on elastic and total-variation-based ones. Furthermore, we investigate two solution methods, namely the Landweber iteration and the Levenberg-Marquardt method with different details. The resulting PDEs are solved by a linear or nonlinear multigrid method which can be combined with a multiscale approach serving for good approximations to the solution on coarser as start approximations on finer levels. The presentation is completed by several examples demonstrating the capability of the methods.
