Numerical Simulations of Ion Channels using Finite Elements

Workshop on Ion Channels, Wed, 10 Oct, 2007

Speaker: Marie-Therese Wolfram

Abstract

The transport of electrons and holes in a semiconductor as well as the flow of ions through a membrane channel can be described by the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations.
In this talk we will briefly discuss the underlying analysis of the transient PNP equations. We review numerical solving strategies for PNP systems, which originate from semiconductor simulations. These strategies can be easily adapted to fit our proposed model for ion channels. In particular we present a mixed finite element approach for convection dominated problems, which we use in our numerical simulations. We illustrate our technique with numerical simulations of L-type calcium channels in 2D and 3D.
