From biochemical kinetics to systems biology

Workshop on Systems Biology, Mon, 05 Nov, 2007

Speaker: Peter Schuster

Abstract

Biochemical kinetics was a highly fashionable discipline from its very beginning in the early twentieth century until the nineteen seventieth before people became more interested in biomolecular structures and qualitative interpretation of biological function. Within the last twenty years the situation has changed again: The availability of an enormous wealth of data from genomics, proteomics and functional genomics calls for a new quantitative approach to cell biology that is built upon the old approaches. The talk will present an overview of possible approaches to overcome the apparent problems in quantitative biology, for example validation of data from different origins, previously unknown high dimensionality of molecular dynamics, low particle numbers requiring stochastic models, spatial heterogeneity of cells and cell organelles, and highly organized and preprogrammed supramolecular structures.
