Abstract
How much can we learn about the function of an organ, from its shape?
In the case of the ear's cochlea, its spiral shape had been ignored for decades - it was thought that the cochlea 's spiral shape serves to pack a long organ into a tight space in the scull. It turns out, however, that the spiral shape serves to redistribute acoustic wave energy flow across the cochlear channel, in a way that affects perception of low frequency sounds.
I will present an overview of how the cochlea functions, and discuss how the spiral shape affects the mechanics involved in sound perception. Our findings are compared against mammalian morphological data.
