Dr. Roland Griesse
Teaching
Winter 2006/07
In the winter semester of 2006/07 I am holding a replacement professorship (Vertretungsprofessur) at Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany. I am teaching the following classes there:Numerical Methods for ODEs (go to class homepage at TU Chemnitz)
Numerical methods for ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are an essential tool to solve problems in science and technology. Among the goals of this course are:- understanding numerical methods for initial and boundary value problems
- numerical analysis: convergence and stability
- step size control
- practical issues of implementation
Tutorial classes: to be announced
Email: roland.griesse@oeaw.ac.at
Optimal Control of PDEs (go to class homepage at TU Chemnitz)
Many problems from industry and the natural sciences are described mathematically in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs). Some examples are the cooling of steel profiles, or the growth of crystals. Very often, control functions such as the intensity of cooling can be used to optimize the outcome of the process. In this course, we will treat- examples from science and technology
- linear and semilinear elliptic PDEs
- necessary and sufficient optimality conditions
- discretization techniques and numerical methods
Classes: Tuesdays, 11:30-13:00 in 2/B202
Tutorial classes: Wednesdays, 7:30-9:00 in 2/B202
Email: roland.griesse@oeaw.ac.at
Proposals for Diploma and Master's Theses
I am offering a number of projects for diploma and master's theses in the areas of
- Optimal Control of Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations
- Numerical Simulation of Partial Differential Equations
- Numerical Methods for Optimal Control Problems
- Robustness Issues in Optimization and Optimal Control
